Fix "Landing page not working" / 404 disapprovals on Shopify

The error

Landing page not working

What it means

Google tried to open the product's landing page and got an error instead of a working page (for example a 4xx or 5xx status). Because shoppers would hit a dead page, Google disapproves the product. This is about the page returning an error, not about robots.txt blocking the crawl.

Why it happens on Shopify

On Shopify the usual causes are a product that was deleted or unpublished while it is still in the feed, a changed product handle that broke the old /products/{handle} URL, or a removed variant whose specific URL no longer resolves. The feed keeps pointing at the old link, so Google hits a 404 or a long redirect chain.

How to fix it

  1. Open the product's link from the feed in a browser and confirm it loads with a 200 status, not a 404 or a long redirect chain (keep redirects to two or fewer).
  2. If you renamed a product, either restore the old handle or set up a redirect (Online Store, Navigation, URL Redirects) and update the feed to the new URL.
  3. For products you no longer sell, mark them out of stock rather than deleting them, or remove them from the feed entirely so Google stops crawling a dead URL.
  4. Re-sync the Google & YouTube app so the corrected URLs reach Merchant Center, then request a review.

Deleting a product to fix an error usually creates this one. Mark items out of stock to preserve their URL, history, and ranking. (A related issue, "Product page unavailable," covers 404s found during routine crawls; the fix is the same.)
