Fix "Image too small" disapprovals in Google Merchant Center
The error
Image too smallWhat it means
Google rejected a product because its image is below the minimum pixel size. A disapproved product disappears from both free Shopping listings and paid Shopping ads until the image is fixed.
Why it happens on Shopify
Shopify serves images at whatever resolution you uploaded. Low-resolution supplier photos, thumbnails, or images cropped too tightly fall under Google's minimum. This is increasingly common because Google raised the bar.
How to fix it
- Upload product images at least 500x500 pixels; 1500x1500 or larger is recommended for quality and for newer Shopping surfaces.
- Replace any low-resolution supplier images with higher-resolution versions.
- Avoid images that are mostly whitespace or watermarked, which can trigger related quality issues.
- After updating, let Merchant Center re-crawl, or request a re-review.
As of the 2026-04-14 product-data spec update, Google warns on images under 500x500, with enforcement scheduled for 2027-01-31. The current hard minimums are 100x100 for most products and 250x250 for apparel.
